How To Properly Exfoliate

683 1024 Sheridan Gregory

When it comes to beauty tips and tricks, one of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned over the last year surrounds exfoliation and how to properly exfoliate. Prior to learning the right steps, I’d harshly rub my face with a washcloth or use intense beaded scrubs (which — turns out — are horrible for your skin). But after doing a little research and experiencing more facials, I think I’ve finally got it down!

What is exfoliation?

First off, it’s important to know why exfoliation is key (and what exactly it is!). Bottom line: it’s removing dead skin cells and aiding in turnover of those cells. You could apply all the oils and lotions and serums you want, but if you don’t have a fresh complexion to apply to, those products won’t go further than surface level. And I’m not just talking about your face (though that’s the main point of this article) — your body should also be exfoliated using a body brush or something similar.

I know I’ve had some confusion with things like Clarisonics and whether those truly exfoliate, and turns out, they’re not enough. Those are more for clearing out pores and residue — they aren’t turning over skin cells on their own. Also, as you read this, please know that you shouldn’t use one of the exfoliants with a Clarisonic or a similar device. Those devices can be used often, but should only mix with a very gentle cleanser (like this one).

How often should you exfoliate?

I’ve heard multiple answers to the question of “how often,” but what works for me personally is 2-3 times a week — which my facialist agreed with. This way, you’re properly turning over your cells, but your skin has time to adjust and heal. If you have sensitive skin, you may even try 1x a week to start.

As for when in your day to do it, I prefer nighttime. Once in awhile, my skin will get a little pink after the process (but in a good, flushed way) — plus, I live for the feeling of an exfoliated face followed by alllll the face products. I know, I live an exciting life you guys!

What products should I use?

And now for the best part — the products I love. Like I mentioned above, you definitely want to stay away from anything harsh. Even if you suffer from dry flaky skin, do your best to ignore anything that seems like it’ll strip your skin. I promise that after your skin gets used to an exfoliation routine, your struggles with dead skin will be a distant memory anyways.

OK, but back to products…I personally like to switch up how I exfoliate. Some weeks I’m really craving a mask, other times I just want a simple cleanser to do the work. Up to you!

Face Masks — Face masks feel lux and usually multi-task, so I definitely don’t skip my Sunday masks. Here are some favorites: Ole Henriksen and my new favorite, ARCONA.

Cleansers — Some people use a cleanser like this daily, but like I said, I choose something a few times a week. These shouldn’t be too harsh if you choose to use daily, though: KORRES (I love the whole Vitamin C line from them!) and Philosophy

Treatments/scrubs — Always read the label on these guys because some are more serious than others aka you might only use it once a month or something. But these are amazing: ExfoliKate & the gentle version is incredible for sensitive skin!

Facials — If you can swing it, try to head in for a facial once a month or as often as possible. They can obviously really handle exfoliating. If you’re in the Los Angeles area, I highly recommend Kate Somerville!

After you’re done exfoliating, it’s then time to go into your full nightly (or daily) skincare routine. After a couple weeks of adding this step to your program, you’ll notice your products working even better since they’ll be absorbed.

Let me know if you have any questions! Also, which products do you swear by when it comes to exfoliating? Comment below!

Who’s ready for a weekly update?!

Life has been a little hectic lately. That is honestly putting it lightly too. I’ve pretty much been running around like a mad woman & let me tell you, it’s not pretty! Busy is good though & I’m beyond thankful for every opportunity that comes mine (& Adam’s) direction.

salt & straw ice cream salt & straw los angeles

We’ve been shooting content nonstop lately because Adam is leaving on a production trip soon & will be gone for 10 days. I’m trying not to freak out over here but 10 days seems so long to me right now! We’ve been together for almost 9 years & I think the longest we’ve ever been apart is 1 week. So basically what I’m getting at is.. Send help! Kidding but seriously, we’re trying to prep posts & photos but our schedules have been nuts. Thankfully we both love creating content so we really can’t complain! It just requires a lot of time to find locations to shoot & actually create the images 🙂

I figured I would start doing little weekly updates for you guys again & sharing things about our life as well as some of the things I’m loving each week. I hope that you find these types of posts fun & interesting because I think this will be the easiest way to keep you all updated & also share my favorites. With that said, now onto my favorites for this week!

+ My new favorite pair of sneakers. I can’t stop wearing them!

+ I finally purchased a new one of these little guys. I’ve been using my last one for a lot longer than I even want to admit haha.

What’s In My Makeup Bag – Kauai

I am notorious for being an “over packer”. I’ve never been one of those people who can just bring a carry-on (& I don’t think I ever will be!) BUT I have gotten much better at packing less & I feel so much better on trips!

The one thing I’m SO bad at overpacking is makeup. I don’t know why but i always feel like i need to pack more just in case something breaks. Just typing that out makes me feel absurd. I rarely have makeup break on me so it’s quite possibly one of my more irrational worries haha. But since I’ve been trying to pack less in general, I have to include my makeup bag. So I figured I would share what’s in my makeup bag for our trip to Kauai!
I kept my makeup pretty minimal & only brought holy grail products in my makeup bag because let’s face it, those are my most reached for products anyways 🙂

Herbal Essences Changes

Embracing Change With Herbal Essences

683 1024 Sheridan Gregory

Over the past couple of years, I have gone through a whirlwind of changes. From moving to NYC to Hendrix’s birth & the past 15 months of his life, I have changed so much as an individual & as a mother. While change can be difficult at times (especially for the anxious type like myself), I’ve learned to embrace it over the years & a simple change of mindset has helped me grow so much.

Herbal Essences

When I heard about the Herbal Essences ‘Changes’ campaign, I immediately knew I wanted to be apart of it! One, because who doesn’t love Herbal Essences products!? & Two, because I have had the craziest change in my hair after having Hendrix & as silly as it might sound, these changes (baby AND hair) have completely changed my mindset on life. Honestly, when I first watched the Herbal Essences Changes Video I started to tear up because it’s so inspiring to see people have the courage to make a change. It’s incredible how freeing change can be!

Fishtail Braid Hairstyle

Having a baby is a big change both mentally & physically. While everyone is aware of the obvious physical changes that come with pregnancy (hello, giant baby bump), I’ve learned that a lot of people aren’t aware of the hair loss about 6 months AFTER you have your baby. I’ll admit I was shocked when my hair started falling out after I had Hendrix & it’s funny because I had already gone through the whole experience previously with Kannon! There was something this time around though that felt different & that’s when I decided to approach things differently. I decided to embrace the new hair growth (even though at times it was a nightmare to style) & I kind of viewed the whole experience as “new hair, new me”. Instead of lingering on the hair loss, I focused on the growth & decided to focus on my growth as an individual as well. With that change came a newfound happiness within myself & I’m beyond thankful for that!

Easy Fall Hairstyle

Have any of you had an experience where a small change ended up having a huge impact on your life?

If you haven’t already, I would love for you all to watch the video from the Herbal Essences ‘Changes’ campaign. I find it so inspiring & I hope every one of you who watches it feels the same!

Special thanks to Herbal Essences & POPSUGAR for sponsoring this post 🙂

The Friday Five

819 1024 Sheridan Gregory

I asked you all on Instagram what kind of posts you wanted to see more of & the majority of you said that you wanted to see more of my favorites. & when I say the majority of you, I mean the majority of you! Thank you all for the feedback & post ideas, I hope you’re excited about new content every day during the week now!!

I decided to create this series (The Friday Five) so that I can share five of my favorite things/products every single week. I figured it was the easiest way for me to talk about the things I’ve been loving lately & consistently sharing my favorites with you all. I hope you guys enjoy this new series & will check back every Friday for a new post. Now onto the favorites!

Carli Bybel Palette Swatches

1.) Carli Bybel Palette
I have been loving this palette ever since I filmed this Tutorial/first impressions video. The formula of these powders is a buttery & they blend like a dream! It’s perfect for every skin tone & I love that I can use it in every season. Plus, you can’t beat the $22.50 price tag!

tarte marine boosting mist review

2.) Tarte Marine Boosting Mist
I am obsessed with face mists these days & never go a day without using one. Not even exaggerating either! I love that this one is a four-in-one & can be used as a primer, Makeup setting spray, hydrating mist & skin refresher. I have used this mist in all four ways & I can’t get enough of it. Also, for those of you with oily skin, this one doesn’t give you that overly glow-y look & doesn’t feel heavy on the skin. Oh, & it smells amaaazing!

trader joes scandinavian swimmers

3.) Trader Joe’s Scandinavian Swimmers
My current favorite sweet treat obsession. Hands down my favorite gummies at the moment & that is saying a lot because I love a good gummy candy! I really should stop buying these because if they’re in our pantry, I’m going to eat them. Want to know how I spend most every Friday night? Curled up on the couch with Adam, eating these & watching Friends on Netflix. We have a riveting social life, we know 🙂

zara flower bag

4.) Zara Flower Bag
I can’t get enough of this flower bag & if you follow me on Instagram, you probably already know that. I love the cross body chain & honestly, I get compliments every time I wear this. What’s not to love about it?

NYX Lip Cream Swatch

5.) NYX Lip Cream in Sable
I get asked what lip color I’m wearing every time I wear this so I figured I would share with you all. This is a matte shade but I like to layer it over my Clarins Lip Oil so that it glides on smooth & doesn’t dry out my lips at all. You better believe this will be my go-to lip color all Fall long!

10 Ways To Be Healthier Today

1024 685 Sheridan Gregory

If you’ve been following me on social media for a while, you might remember earlier this year when I was on a major health kick. I just wasn’t feeling my best, and I decided to make a change. I wanted to not only feel better but to be a good role model for my boys when it comes to living a healthy life. While I’ve definitely gotten a bit off track with the craziness that is summer, it’s top of mind heading into fall.

healthy lifestyle (I’m not flexible AT ALL but I’m trying to stretch more :))

To not get overwhelmed, I love the idea of making small, attainable changes. Things that you can do each and every day to make yourself feel better, and eventually turn smaller habits into larger ones. Here are 10 things to try:

1.) Walk

One of the best things I can do for myself is to move. It doesn’t have to be an intense cardio workout either. Any kind of movement is better than none, so if that means integrating a walk into your morning routine or as a family after dinner, do it!

2.) Swap out one food item

Overhauling your diet is no joke, so to start off more realistically, try swapping out one thing a day. For example, if you’d usually reach for a bag of chips, try veggies and hummus. Or if you’d normally load up the sour cream on your favorite tacos, switch it out for plain Greek yogurt. This totally works for me, and it’s not giving everything up at once.

3.) Skip the glass of wine

While I personally don’t drink alcohol, I know that a lot of people enjoy a glass of wine after a long day. If you want to make a healthy swap, though, skip the wine and go for a flavored water instead. Less sugar, less hangover, fewer calories. Don’t worry, you can still have your glass of red, just try to limit alcohol the days you want to feel excellent.

how to healthier lifestyle

4.) Stretch

On those days when being a morning person is just not for me, a good stretch always helps me feel energized. Even if you do it while still lying in bed, it’s amazing how much more awake it can make you feel.

5.) Meditate

I totally understand it can be hard to find a few peaceful moments to yourself, but this will do a lot for your mental health, which is just as important as physical. You don’t have to have a yoga mat or anything, in particular, to meditate either, which is why I like it. You can literally be in the Target parking lot and take a few deep breaths in the silence before getting out of your car. Been there!

6.) Start your morning off right

Routines are so important to me – especially in the morning and especially as a mama. When I don’t get through my normal cadence, I feel like my whole day gets thrown off. Make your bed, have some warm lemon water – do whatever makes your morning feel peaceful.

7.) Limit tech

Because it’s nearly impossible for me to completely stay away from technology throughout the day, I think the best way to limit the amount of screen time I get on a daily basis is to implement a “phone bedtime”. Turning my phone onto airplane mode at 8 p.m. is the most effective way I’ve found to do this because that way nothing can come through and tempt me.

8.) Go to bed early

Celebs and doctors have been saying for years that the secret to a “youthful” appearance is sleep. If you’re anything like me, though, sleep is always the first thing to get sacrificed when there are a million other things to do (including two little boys!). But going to bed even 15 minutes earlier helps!

easy ways to be healthy

9.) Take a minute for self-care

This kind of goes hand-in-hand with meditation and limiting tech, but make sure you’re setting time aside during the day just for you. I used to think these pockets of time would magically appear in my day, but I realized spare time is a limited commodity around here, so it’s on us to make sure we’re giving ourselves time to simply take care of ourselves.

10.) Drink H20

Like right now! It’s a super easy way to feel healthier in an instant. I’ve started keeping a full glass of water next to my bed so that it’s the first thing I do when I wake up. I also drink a full glass before each meal/snack. I try to keep that going throughout the day.

5 Must-Have Vitamin C Skincare Products

1024 683 Sheridan Gregory

I have struggled with pigmentation issues since I was a teenager. Dark spots from blemishes would last for ages & I thought there was nothing I could really do for them. That was until I was about 20 & actually started learning about Skincare & experimenting with different products!

Products with Vitamin C in them are always in my skin care regimen because I love that they help lighten dark spots, make my skin look radiant & help diminish the look of my fine lines & wrinkles. If you’re not using a product with vitamin C in it then I highly recommend adding one of these products below to your regimen. Who doesn’t want healthy glowing skin!?
I received the cutest press package in the mail a couple of weeks ago for the new Mary Kay TimeWise Vitamin C squares & I couldn’t wait to try out the product. Thank you to the Mary Kay team for sending this amazing juicer over with the product, we are obsessed! & I figured this was the perfect time to show you my favorite Vitamin C Skincare products!

Messy Beach Waves Tutorial

1024 683 Sheridan Gregory

One of the most common questions I get is, “How do you curl your hair!?” or “What do you use to get your messy waves??”. So, I figured I would film a new video & show you guys how I get my messy beach waves! I also included little tips on how to style those pesky little baby hairs around your face for anyone with postpartum regrowth or breakage so I hope that helps some of you asking for those!

While you definitely don’t need to use this exact curling iron, this is the one that I use & I really love it. If you’re looking for an actual curling iron with a clip, I use this one all the time as well.

I hope you enjoy this messy beach waves tutorial & feel free to ask any questions you might have. I know that it can be kind of confusing watching hair tutorials sometimes 🙂
